The Thailand Board of Investment (BOI), on 1 September 2022, started accepting applications to the new 10-year Long-Term Resident Visa (LTR). LTR Visa is a new type of visa from Thailand that offers tax benefits to increase attractiveness for residency and investment among individuals with high potential. Currently, Thailand is a hub for multinational companies (MNCs) from around the world and also a significant tourist destination in Asia.
The LTR Visa in Thailand is available in 4 different types: Wealthy Global Citizens, Wealthy Pensioners, Work-from-Thailand Professionals, and Highly Skilled Professionals. Spouses and dependents of LTR Visa holders will also hold the same type of visa.
- Minimum net worth of 1 million US dollars
- Minimum annual income of 80,000 US dollars for the past 2 years
- Minimum investment of 500,000 US dollars in Thai government bonds, direct investment from abroad, or real estate investment in Thailand
- Health insurance coverage of at least 50,000 US dollars or social security coverage in Thailand or minimum savings of 100,000 US dollars
Remark: Applicants must meet all the above qualifications to apply for this type of visa.
- Minimum annual income of 80,000 US dollars at the time of application
- In the case of income less than 80,000 US dollars but more than 40,000 US dollars, applicants must make a minimum investment of 250,000 US dollars in Thai government bonds, direct investment from abroad, or real estate investment in Thailand
- Health insurance coverage of at least 50,000 US dollars or social security coverage in Thailand or minimum savings of 100,000 US dollars
Remark: Personal income under the LTR Wealthy Pensioners refers to income without employment, such as retirement funds, rental income, dividends, etc. Salary income from work is not eligible for this type of visa.
- Minimum annual income of 80,000 US dollars for the past 2 years
- In the case of income less than 80,000 US dollars but more than 40,000 US dollars in the past 2 years, applicants must have completed a master's degree or higher, possess intellectual property, or have received investment in Series A funding
- Publicly listed companies or private companies operating for at least 3 years with a total revenue of at least 150 million US dollars in the past 3 years
- Minimum of 5 years of work experience in a relevant field in the past 10 years
- Health insurance coverage of at least 50,000 US dollars or social security coverage in Thailand or minimum savings of 100,000 US dollars
- Minimum annual income of 80,000 US dollars for the past 2 years
- In the case of income less than 80,000 US dollars but more than 40,000 US dollars in the past 2 years or before retirement, applicants must have completed a master's degree or higher in the fields of science and technology or possess special expertise related to their work in Thailand
- No minimum income requirement for professionals working for the Thai government
- Businesses operating in targeted industries by the Thai government
- Work for companies, higher education institutions, research centers, special training institutions in Thailand, or Thai government officials
- Minimum of 5 years of work experience in targeted industries by the Thai government, except for individuals with a doctoral degree or higher in targeted industries or those working for the Thai government
- Minimum health insurance coverage of 50,000 US dollars or social security coverage in Thailand or a minimum savings of 100,000 US dollars.
- Must be legally dependent (spouse and children).
- Same-sex marriage or partnerships are not legally recognized in Thailand.
- Children can be granted LTR Visas until they reach the age of 20.
- Minimum health insurance coverage of 50,000 US dollars or social security coverage in Thailand or a minimum savings of 25,000 US dollars.
1. Ten-year visa validity for residing in Thailand. Initially granted for 5 years, with the option to extend for an additional 5 years if eligibility requirements are met.
2. Exemption from the employment ratio of 4 Thai employees to 1 foreign national.
3. Fast-track services at international airports in Thailand.
4. Extension of reporting period from 90 days to 1 year, and exemption from applying for a new entry permit.
5. Multiple Re-entry Permit for multiple entries to Thailand.
6. Work permit issuance in Thailand (Digital Work Permit).
7. 17% personal income tax rate for skilled professionals.
8. Exemption from tax on income earned outside of Thailand.
9. Immigration and work permit processing services at the One Stop Service Center for Visa and Work Permit.
Currently, relevant agencies of Thailand such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Labor, Immigration Bureau, and Board of Investment (BOI) have made necessary preparations regarding legal regulations and convenient administrative systems.
The BOI, as the main agency responsible for screening highly skilled foreign individuals who wish to reside in Thailand, has opened an online platform for LTR Visa applications at https://ltr.boi.go.th. The LTR Visa aims to attract new groups of highly skilled individuals with expertise in modern technologies to stimulate expenditure and investment, as well as accelerate the recovery of the Thai economy.
